While traditionally desktop apps use help for user assistance, modern mobile apps often use onboarding and coach marks to help users get started. While these aids are popular and accepted, they reveal design flaws because there is usually an intuitive design alternative that eliminates the need.
This talk starts with an exploration and analysis of onboarding, coach marks, and other forms of user assistance used in popular mobile apps. You will learn some design evaluation techniques and guidelines to eliminate the need. You will see these techniques applied to eliminate or simplify the need for onboarding and coach marks. Finally, you will learn how modern user assistance should focus more on delivering value than explaining confusing, unintuitive UI.
