Documentation in the Wild West

Building Documentation Systems at Startups

Are you the lone technical writer at a developing startup? Are you a startup founder or manager who’s trying to learn how to provide documentation to your customers? This talk is for you!

Documentarians face significant challenges establishing new documentation systems and a “culture of doc” in today’s move-fast-and-break-things startup world. Many technical writers at startups have to navigate difficult technical and interpersonal situations to create resources their customers need, all in a fast-paced environment with limited resources. In this talk, we discuss strategies for startup documentarians to set themselves, their startups, and their customers up for success, including:

  • What factors to consider as you build a documentation implementation in a rapidly changing environment
  • How to select and implement a documentation tool chain that can develop with the company as it grows
  • How to prioritize a backlog of documentation work
  • How to train your company’s engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to support documentation
  • Common pitfalls to avoid as you build your documentation implementation and team

This talk is presented by Caitlin Cronkhite, CEO and technical content strategy consultant at Good Words LLC. Caitlin and her team specialize in developing and implementing documentation systems for enterprise companies and startups from Silicon Valley to the East Coast.
